Bulawayo-Arts-Awards

Bongani Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
ORGANISERS of the Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAAs) are searching for presenters for the inaugural awards ceremony taking place at the Large City Hall next Friday.

Raisedon Baya, one of the members of the BAAs steering team, said they wanted to spice up the event by bringing in new faces who are not necessarily from the arts industry.

“BAAs are looking for a few young vibrant achievers in any field who are below 35 years to present the awards.

“We need about five people who are not necessarily in the arts industry to present the awards in 38 categories. They must stay or work in Bulawayo.”

He said some names had been brought forward and they were still deliberating on giving them the task adding that the search for presenters was also a way to market the awards.

“This is part of our many ways to spread the word to other people in the city and across the country that Bulawayo is hosting its first arts awards ceremony. Just like the voting process which has created much hype, we hope the search for presenters will also create a similar hype, the more people know about the awards, the better.”

Baya said MCs of the night had already been secured although they will only be revealed this Friday.

On their preparedness to host the awards ceremony, the organiser said although they had received a considerable amount of sponsorship, they could still do with some more support.

“There are about 10 categories that still don’t have sponsorship, the rest have people who promised to sponsor. However, we appeal to everyone, not only companies, but also individuals to come forward and sponsor any category of their choice so as to promote arts in the city.”

Marvelous Nakamba being unveiled as a Club Brugge player

Marvelous Nakamba being unveiled as a Club Brugge player

Ricky Zililo, Senior Sports Reporter
NATIONAL team midfielder Marvelous Nakamba has signed a four-year deal with top Belgian side Club Brugge for an undisclosed fee after passing his medicals yesterday.

The Warriors’ man joins Club Brugge, who finished second in Belgium’s topflight league last season, two points behind champions Anderlecht, who were also reportedly after his signature.

He joins the Belgian giants from Netherlands’ Eredivisie side Vitesse.

Club Brugge announced on their website that they had reached an agreement with Nakamba yesterday.

“Nakamba passed medical examinations. Marvelous Nakamba signed this afternoon after successfully completing his medical and physical tests, a contract for 4 years at Blue-Black. We welcome Marvelous to Bruges,” the club wrote on its website.

Club Brugge also described Nakamba as an “energetic midfielder with quality passing and impressive power in duels”.

The 23-year-old midfielder who was in the last year of a four-year contract at Dutch topflight side Vitesse, cut short his holiday and left Bulawayo for Belgium on Sunday to seal the deal.

He had also been linked with English Premier League side Everton, Turkish giants Galatasaray and top German sides Hamburger SV and Wolfsburg.

In his final season at Vitesse, Nakamba won admiration from the club’s fans, who voted him their second best player of the season.

Nakamba established himself as a vital player at the Dutch outfit and won his first silverware in Europe when Vitesse collected a major trophy for the first time in their 125-year history by beating AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Cup final.

He will now play in the Uefa Champions League next season with Club Brugge.

Nakamba joins Zimbabwe’s list of elite footballers to play in Europe’s club competitions, who include legendary goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar, Kennedy Chihuri, Norman Mapeza, Musa Mguni and Costa Nhamoinesu.

He will link up with Warriors’ captain Knowledge Musona, who plays for Belgian Pro League side K.V. Oostende, as well as former national team midfielders Vusa Nyoni and Honour Gombami.

‘Serial killer’ Jindu seeks release on bail

Cynthia Dube, Court Reporter
A SUSPECTED serial killer from Bulawayo who allegedly shot dead his friend and a neighbour before burying their bodies in shallow graves in Burnside suburb, wants to be released on bail.

Rodney Tongai Jindu (26) of Glengarry suburb yesterday submitted a bail application to Tredgold Court magistrate Mr Tinashe Tashaya, stating that he is a good candidate for bail pending trial.

Mr Tashaya referred the matter to the High Court and Jindu is set to appear before High court Judge Justice Nicholas Mathonsi today for bail hearing.

In his application, Jindu said he deserves bail and the State must not mislead the courts into ruling against his application.

“The State is hereby encouraged to not go into the merits of the case which must be reserved for a competent court of law but instead must focus on the matter at hand, that is bail pending trial. The rule of law is that the accused person is presumed innocent till proven guilty,” reads the application.

“The State is urged to stop misleading the honourable court by getting into the merits. Section 50 of the Zimbabwean constitution states that ‘any person who is detained pending trial for an alleged offence and is not tried within reasonable time, must be released from detention whether conditionally or unconditionally, or no reasonable conditions to ensure that after release the accused person attends trial, does not interfere with State witnesses or commit other offences.”

Jindu, who is a father of two minor children, said he is a suitable candidate for bail because he is a bread winner at home and would not run away from “mere allegations” levelled against him.

“I am willing to stand trial and prove my innocence in a competent court. I am also willing to submit my valid passport and report three times per month at Queens Park Police Station. The courts are supposed to take note that l am of fixed abode. I am not going to commit any offence if the courts grant me bail and it is my prayer that the courts throw away the State’s response to oppose my bail,” reads the application.

“There is no way that l will run away from the police because l surrendered myself to the police station on February 20 this year concerning the death of the deceased. The court must take it into consideration that I am deprived of my freedom while l am innocent.”

Two weeks ago, Jindu told magistrate Mr Tashaya that he wants the State to release his Nissan Gloria Sedan car so that his mother, Ms Engelina Mawaro, can use it to bring him better food at Khami remand prison.

He said he cannot stand prison food and therefore required regular and better cooked meals from home.

Last month Jindu refused to confirm his statements, telling the magistrate that he did not write them freely and voluntarily.

Yesterday he queried why the State was alleging he was the last person to be seen with his deceased friends, when they had not asked every person in Bulawayo to confirm the allegation.

Jindu is facing two counts of killing his neighbour Mboneli Joko Ncube (30) and childhood friend Cyprian Kudzurunga (28).

He was arrested on February 3 for allegedly killing Kudzurunga of Queens Park East and further investigations linked him to the death of Ncube on January 29.

Gold output increases. . . Govt support for miners bears fruits

gold bar

Senior Business Reporter
ZIMBABWE recorded a 30 percent jump in gold deliveries in May to about two tonnes compared to 1.5 tonnes in April, data from Fidelity Printers and Refiners show.

Latest statistics from Fidelity Printers, the sole gold buyer since 2015, show that in May primary producers and small-scale miners had a combined delivery of 1 920.3 kilogrammes, the highest monthly output so far this year.

Of that figure, deliveries by primary producers were at 1 045.3 kg while small-scale miners delivered 875.9 kg.

In January, primary producers and small-scale miners had a combined total of 1 636.5 kg, while in February deliveries declined to 1 454.9 kg.

In March gold deliveries to Fidelity rose to 1 545.4 kg before receding to 1 489.3 kg in April.

The miners, in the first quarter of the year produced a combined total of 4 636.8 kg while statistics from the country’s sole gold buyer show that 3 409.7 kg have so far been delivered in the second quarter.

Zimbabwe Miners’ Federation first vice president Mr Ishmael Kaguru said output from small-scale gold miners was early this year hampered by the incessant rains that saw some of the mines becoming waterlogged.

“Productivity by small-scale miners has largely been affected by the incessant rains the country received particularly in the first quarter. As a result of the excessive rains, productivity was affected because our members’ mines were inaccessible due to water logging,” he said.

In January, small-scale miners delivered 713.5 kg while in February the production level declined to 686.6 kg before dropping further to 682.8 kg in March. Output by the small-scale gold producers in April maintained a downward trend at 622.3 kg before picking up at 875.9 kg in May.

“Despite the downward trend that we experienced in terms of productivity, we expect going forward in the year, the position will shift to reflect an upward trend because of the support that we have received from the Government through Fidelity Printers and Refiners as far as funding is concerned. The miners have also secured loans under the $20 million gold development facility from Fidelity Printers,” said Mr Kaguru.

The Government this year targets national gold output to reach 24.5 tonnes from about 21 tonnes achieved in 2016.

Mr Kaguru said the target was achievable basing on the support the miners were getting from the Government.

According to the 2017 first quarter bulletin released by the Treasury, the mining sector is anticipated to generate about $3 billion in export earnings this year anchored on the rebound in most international mineral prices including chrome.

“Projected growth of about 5.1 percent is being driven largely by key minerals of gold, platinum group of metals, chrome and nickel. Notwithstanding lower output for some minerals such as coal, gold and diamonds, the first quarter saw a huge leap in chrome production.

“Temporary setbacks for gold were on account of flooding due to incessant rains, with output recoveries anticipated during the second quarter,” reads part of the report.

During the period January to March 2017, cumulative gold output stood at 4 637 kg, marginally lower than the 4 711kg produced during the same period last year.

“However, the share of SMEs continues to rise, with the 2017 first quarter output at 2 083 kg against 2 033 kg of the same period in 2016,” said Treasury.

Production is anticipated to pick up from the second quarter, to give annual output consistent with the total projection for the year of 24 500 kg.

“The anticipated increase is in view of the ongoing support to SMEs with an additional $20 million small-scale mining facility having been availed for equipment, coupled with the five percent export incentive scheme.

“Furthermore, the expected resumption of riverbed mining in the second quarter of the year is also expected to drive up production,” said the report.

Man ‘scalds’ lover. . . Woman battles for life in ICU

Patrick Chitumba and Blessings Chidakwa, Midlands Reporters
A WOMAN from Gweru is battling for life in the Intensive Care Unit at Gweru Provincial Hospital after she was allegedly scalded with an unknown substance by her married boyfriend following a misunderstanding.

Acting Midlands provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said the incident happened on Sunday morning at the woman’s lodgings in Mkoba 12 Infill suburb.

She identified the victim as Ms Priscilla Munyanyi, a mother of a three-year-old girl.

Asst Insp Mukwende said the boyfriend, Shepherd Muringani — a mechanic in the city — was arrested after a trap was set at the hospital where he had gone to check on Ms Munyanyi’s condition at about 6PM yesterday.

“I can confirm that we have arrested a male adult from Mkoba 12 Infill Suburb in connection with the scalding of a woman with an unknown substance in the same suburb on Sunday morning. The suspect was arrested at Gweru Provincial Hospital where he had gone to see the victim. He is facing attempted murder charges and will appear in court soon as investigations are still underway,” she said.

In an interview just before his arrest, Muringani said he had a quarrel with Ms Munyanyi but denied scalding her.

He said he is the one who was taking care of Ms Munyanyi, adding that she could have attempted to commit suicide after he ended their relationship.

“Yes, we had a dispute after I told her that it was over. Since I was the one paying rentals and taking care of her three-year- old child, she might have failed to come to terms with the hard truth. The reason I called it quits is because she was always in bars and night clubs, something I was totally against,” said Muringani.

Priscilla Munyanyi

Priscilla Munyanyi

“She was cooking using a paraffin stove so she might have burnt herself with that. When the incident occurred I was at my workplace in Mkoba 12 Light Industries where I work as a car mechanic.”

In an interview at Gweru Provincial Hospital, Ms Munyanyi’s sister, Loreen, said she knew Muringani as her sibling’s boyfriend.

“I stay in Marondera and I was shocked to learn that my sister was in the ICU battling for her life after she was burnt by her boyfriend. We don’t know the reasons for this vicious attack and she is not talking as doctors are saying she is in a critical condition,” said Loreen.

Sources told The Chronicle yesterday that the two lovers had a misunderstanding on Sunday morning at the woman’s lodgings.

The source said Muringani stays with his wife and children in the same neighbourhood.

According to the source, the dispute resulted in Muringani allegedly scalding Ms Munyanyi with a yet to be identified substance on the face and upper part of her body.

“We know these two people. They are in a relationship and we know Priscilla as Shepherd’s small house. We were called to the scene after Shepherd allegedly scalded her. We don’t know why. We then ferried her to Gweru Provincial Hospital where her condition is said to be critical,” said a neighbour on condition of anonymity.

Call attacks on Moslems ‘terrorist acts’

A 47-year-old man has been charged with “terrorism offences” following an attack with a van on Muslims in north London, UK police have said.

The driver slammed the vehicle into worshippers shortly after midnight on Monday as they left late-night prayers at the Muslim Welfare House and the nearby Finsbury Park Mosque, one of the biggest in Britain.

A man, who had earlier suffered a heart attack, died at the scene on Seven Sisters Road, but it was not immediately clear if he was killed by the attacker’s actions. Eight people were taken to hospital.

The Metropolitan police said the driver was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, but he was later charged with the “commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder”.

“At this stage in the investigation, it is believed that the suspect acted alone but we are, of course, investigating all the circumstances leading up to the attack,” the force said in a statement.

The attacker was not named by police. British media identified him as Darren Osborne, a white man who lived in the Welsh capital, Cardiff.

Police said all the victims were from the Muslim community and extra patrols would be deployed to reassure the public, especially those observing Ramadan. The use of a vehicle to mow down pedestrians drew parallels with a deadly attack on London Bridge earlier this month.

In that incident, three men drove a van into pedestrians before embarking on a stabbing spree, in an attack claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group.

In March, London was hit with another ISIL-claimed car and knife attack, that one near the British Parliament in Westminster.

This time the attacker deliberately targeted Muslims, police said.

“More victims of a vehicle that leaves the road aimed as a weapon to kill and maim. But this time, the driver didn’t get away, he didn’t get shot, nor did he have any apparent intent to kill himself,” Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons, reporting from Finsbury Park, said.

The driver was grabbed at the scene by some of the Muslim worshippers and pinned down until police arrived, while others did what they could to help the wounded.

After being seized, the suspect said he had wanted to kill “many Muslim people,” one witness told journalists.

“Over the past weeks and months, Muslims have endured many incidents of Islamophobia and this is the most violent manifestation to date,” said Harun Khan, head of the Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella body.

Mohammed Kozbar, chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque, described the attack as “cowardly”.

“Our community is in shock,” he said, urging people attending prayers to remain vigilant.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May condemned Monday’s attack as “sickening”, saying Britain’s determination to fight “terrorism, extremism and hatred . . . must be the same, whoever is responsible”.

“This was an attack on Muslims near their place of worship,” said May who later visited the mosque.

Human rights lawyer Arsalan Iftikhar said it was “about time” that authorities called such attacks against Muslims “acts of terrorism”.

“For so many years, there have been coordinated attacks against Muslims, Arabs and South Asians all across the West that were never called ‘acts of terrorism’. So finally, for the first time ever, I’ve seen this double standard been lifted,” he said from Washington, DC.

“It’s important to keep in mind that what we saw in London at the Finsbury Park Mosque is not an isolated incident,” he added.

In the days after the London Bridge attack, authorities reported a 40-percent increase in racist incidents in the capital and a five-fold increase in anti-Muslim incidents across Britain.

This month alone, a Muslim woman wearing a headscarf told police in Lancashire her car was struck by a bag of vomit. Worshippers at the Omar Faruque mosque in Cambridge found strips of ham attached to their vehicles. Several Muslim families have reported receiving letters warning, “You are no longer welcome in this country.” Scores say they have been spat on.

In the United States, two men were killed last month after intervening when a male white supremacist began shouting anti-Muslim abuse at teenagers on a train in Portland, Oregon.

According to the American-Islamic Relations Council, there has been a 57 percent rise in what it calls “anti-Muslim bias incidents” since 2015.

“It’s about high time that these acts of terrorism are called ‘terrorism’, and not only called ‘terrorism’ when Muslims are the perpetrators,” Iftikhar said.

“The majority of the population [in the West] doesn’t want to see criminal acts of mass murder committed by people who look like them to be labelled ‘acts of terrorism’ — they are very quick to label ‘acts of terrorism’ against people who are olive-skinned, with ethnic-sounding names,” he added.

“The term ‘terrorism’, sadly, in our western sociopolitical zeitgeist has been coopted to only apply when brown Muslim men commit acts of mass murder, and not when right-wing, white supremacists terrorists do the same.” — Al Jazeera

Tendai Mugabe, Harare Bureau
THE West imposed illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe to scuttle the land reform programme as they feared its success would be contagious on the African continent, First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe has said.

Addressing mourners at the funeral of Cde Dick Chingaira, popularly known as Cde Chinx in Harare yesterday, Dr Mugabe said the land reform was a huge success and other African countries were already copying it.

“The whites were intimidating us because they feared that if the land reform programme in Zimbabwe is a success story other African countries will follow,” she said.

“Now we can actually say it has been a success story and you can see what is happening in countries like South Africa. That was their (whites) fear. So they wanted to gag us and I am happy Cde Chinx was singing hondo yeminda yatokura. Namibian President was here on State visit and he said President Mugabe you are my source of inspiration. You are my hero. Va(Sam) Nujoma liberated Namibia but my duty as the President of Namibia now is to ensure that land  returns to its rightful owners.

“This was what the whites afraid of. They feared it might be contagious. The issue of land can never be suppressed because population is growing as well as the demand for land.  So land is what Cde Chinx fought for.

“We used to have good life here but sanctions were imposed on us. Everyone knows that sanctions were imposed on us because President Mugabe said he wanted to give land back to the people. Cde Chinx supported that through his music. They said why have you done that? We are whites and superior to you. We cannot be challenged by black people. We also blindly fall into that trap and fight among ourselves. They will be laughing at us.”

Dr Mugabe, who is also the Zanu-PF Women’s League secretary, called for unity among Zimbabweans.

She said divisions and factionalism were counterproductive.

“We should all accept that Cde Chinx has left us but we should remember what he has done for us,” she said.

“Let’s not be selfish. I am saying wherever you are you should remember that there are some people who died for this country. Cde Chingaira has succumbed to cancer but those who participated during the war know what was happening that there were sellouts that were being sent with clothes laced with poison. So we are now having some non communicable diseases.

“We should not forget that there are people who died to liberate this country. At times we tend to forget that. We alter our environment through our actions.

“There are some who forget that unity of purpose is important among Zimbabweans.  We have infighting through factionalism and can we say this is the respect that we are giving to our heroes like Cde Chinx?

“As the First Lady of this country, please let us unite as Zimbabweans. We have children and those children should know the history and ideology of our country.”

She hailed the role that Cde Chinx played during the liberation struggle.

Dr Mugabe said Cde Chinx was a polished musician.

“We feel so much pain when people pirate and reproduce other people’s work,” she said.

“Some people take advantage. When you are singing it requires a lot of thinking until people say this is my best song. It takes time. After composing a song someone just comes and pirates that song and Mukoma Chinx gets nothing.

“There are so many talented artistes — very polished musicians out there. At times they do not even go to music school but it will be just a talent that they have. They then decide to use that talent to earn a living and you see someone who does not want to work pirating that music. That is not good at all. It is called piracy. I think law enforcement agencies must descend heavily on those people.”

Dr Mugabe also counselled the Chingaira family to remain united.

Buffalo Souljah and Winky D

Buffalo Souljah and Winky D

Bruce Ndlovu
ZIMBABWEAN dancehall juggernauts Winky D and Buffalo Souljah have combined for a rare collaboration on the song Rugare, a track which has been touted as a potential blockbuster mash-up between two heavyweight chanters.

Last week the two surprised fans with images from a video shoot which they were undertaking south of the Limpopo, with Winky announcing that the pictures were a teaser for a track that would be premiered soon.

True to that promise, the Gafa, as Winky has become known since the release of his last two projects, unleashed the song on Monday afternoon and it immediately caused ripples on social media.

Produced by Nicky, the track sees Winky for the first time in a while flex his lyrical skills over a beat that is not from his favoured partner in hit-making, Oskid.

Although it is an upbeat track, the two chose a subject matter that they felt most Zimbabweans could identify with.

“We’d just been working on a few ideas for a while. We would allow our imaginations to roam free as we looked for the right concept that would suit both of us.

“In the end, we settled for Rugare because we felt that it was something most people could identify with,” said Buffalo Souljah from his South African base.

Buffs, as the chanter is commonly known as, said although the collaboration looked sudden, it was something that had been in the works for a while now.

“We started getting interested in working together about five years ago because fans would comment on both our social media posts. Since then, the interaction has been ongoing, but fans only started seeing us together when we posted a picture earlier this year.

“At that time, we had already started going through beats and concepts for the collaboration.”

News that the two had already shot a video for the song would have come as a relief for the Gafa’s fans, as they have been starved of visuals for songs from the star’s last two albums.

While Winky D has been seemingly camera shy in the last few years, Buffs said that the star was the one who came up with the vision of what the song’s video should look like.

“We used my production team, but it was actually Winky who came up with the concept and was also the co-director of the video,” he said.

The reception of the song will be of interest to fans of both artistes, as while Buffalo Souljah has been lauded around the continent, Winky D has earned adulation at home. The song therefore might give both chanters a chance to exploit each other’s strengths.

EDITORIAL COMMENT: Cde Thabo Mbeki a true Pan Africanist, great statesman

$

Thabo Mbeki

Thabo Mbeki

FORMER South African President Thabo Mbeki is a Pan Africanist of note, a respected statesman and academic whose ideas and thought leadership ranks among the best on the African continent.

He comes from a family of revolutionaries with his father Cde Govan Mbeki among the foremost luminaries of the struggle for self-determination not only in South Africa but in the wider African diaspora. Thus Cde Mbeki is grounded in the rich ethos of the black struggle for emancipation, having endured years of exile instigated by the racist white apartheid government in South Africa.

Perhaps, the former South African President is best known for his leading role in championing The African Renaissance, a concept that says that African people and nations shall overcome the current challenges confronting the continent and achieve cultural, scientific, and economic renewal.

To this day, it continues to be a key part of the post-apartheid intellectual agenda with Cde Mbeki’s famous, “I am an African” speech in May 1996 following the adoption of a new South African constitution encapsulating the idea of an African Renaissance.

Back then Cde Mbeki, who was then Deputy President to struggle icon and former President Nelson Mandela, famously said: “I am born of a people who are heroes and heroines [. . .] Patient because history is on their side, these masses do not despair because today the weather is bad. Nor do they turn triumphalist when, tomorrow, the sun shines. [. . .] Whatever the circumstances they have lived through and because of that experience, they are determined to define for themselves who they are and who they should be”.

In April 1997, Cde Mbeki articulated the elements that comprise the African Renaissance: social cohesion, democracy, economic rebuilding and growth, and the establishment of Africa as a significant player in geo-political affairs. To this day, even in retirement, he continues to champion his vision of an African Renaissance and has strong views on Pan Africanism.

In 2008, at the height of Zimbabwe’s economic and political challenges, Cde Mbeki was the Sadc-appointed mediator tasked with resolving the country’s problems. Zimbabwe stood on a precipice with an inconclusive electoral outcome spawning a tense standoff and necessitating a presidential poll run-off which President Mugabe won convincingly after defeating his main challenger MDC-T president Mr Morgan Tsvangirai.

During the subsequent negotiations to create an inclusive Government comprising the two MDC formations and Zanu-PF, Cde Mbeki conducted himself in an impeccable manner always striving to remain impartial despite the brickbats thrown his way and insurmountable pressure which was being exerted by the West. During this period, he always maintained that Zimbabwe’s internal matters were best handled by Zimbabweans themselves with outsiders only assisting in the process.

As an arbiter, he commanded the respect of all parties and was thus able to thrash out an accord which was to be known as the Global Political Agreement.

The doctrine of non-interference in the affairs of member states is enshrined in both the founding values of the United Nations, African Union and Sadc and Cde Mbeki has always held it sacrosanct. As a Pan Africanist, he has been consistent in defending the continent from the predatory machinations of its erstwhile colonial masters and Zimbabwe has benefited from his astute leadership.

We are therefore not surprised that he continues to stand as a bulwark against all forms of neo-colonialism even as reactionary forces in his country attempt to push a tired regime change agenda in Zimbabwe. Latter day pseudo democrats like Mr Mmusi Maimane of the opposition Democratic Alliance and  misguided loose cannons in the form of Economic Freedom Fighters leader Mr Julius Malema are too naïve and junior to understand the agenda of Western imperialists. They are therefore not qualified to make pronouncements on the affairs of Zimbabwe, particularly the person of President Mugabe.

They are best advised to listen to the wise counsel of elder statesman like Cde Mbeki who understand the intricacies of the neo-colonial mind and the various forces at play when it comes to the Zimbabwe situation.

At the weekend, Cde Mbeki once again reminded South Africans not to meddle in Zimbabwe’s internal affairs, arguing that they have no mandate to call for the removal of President Mugabe from office. Addressing youths on self-determination at Godney Institute of Business in Johannesburg on Saturday, Cde Mbeki alluded to President’s Mugabe call to respect the sovereignty of other states.

He said South Africans have no mandate calling for President Mugabe’s removal from power, the same way Zimbabweans cannot voice on the politics of South Africa. “I would fight with any South African who stands up to say: “I, as a South African, say Robert Mugabe must go . . . ” I say it’s none of your business. It is the business of the people of Zimbabwe,” Cde Mbeki said.

We salute his consistency and principled stance on the Zimbabwe situation and urge him to continue staying true to the values of the black struggle for emancipation and self-determination.

Chitiyo believes. . . Demands more from teammates

Chipo Sabeta in Sfax, Tunisia
DIMUNITIVE Caps United midfielder Ronald “Rooney” Chitiyo has demanded character from his teammates when they face Al Ahli Tripoli in a Caf Champions League group stage encounter at the Stade Tai’eb Mhiri in Sfax tonight (11PM Zim time).

Makepekepe suffered a horrific 2-4 mauling by the Libyan champions at the National Sport Stadium about a fortnight ago, but Chitiyo said it was about time they won under difficult conditions on the continent.

The Libyans play all their home matches in neighbouring Tunisia due to volatility in their native country.

Caps’ last trip to Egypt for the Group B opener against Zamalek was doomed, as they were beaten 2-0, but Chitiyo said they have to change things now.

Chitiyo, who banged in both goals when they beat USM Alger of Algeria 2-1 in Harare, believes they have what it takes and need to stamp their authority against big teams even under difficult conditions.

“There will be difficult places in Africa where we should go and prove that we have character by being on top of our game,” said Chitiyo.

“The players are all geared up for a good game and win above all. We have to show character. We saw that they are a good team and we have to be better than them to win. This is the time to prove that we are a good team. A good team beats the best opponent and we have to do so.”

The 4-2 defeat dampened Caps’ quarter-final hopes, but Chitiyo remains optimistic that the tables can still be turned.

Preparations for the first leg were hampered by injuries to key players that saw Jorum Muchambo replacing the big Edmore Sibanda between the sticks.

They had a slow start to the match that saw defender Justice Jangano’s ill-timed tackle resulting in Al Ahli getting a penalty that Sameh Derbali converted in the 16th minute.

The Libyan champions also capitalised on Caps’ poor defending and errors to increase their lead through a Salem Ablo brace before the breather.

Derbali was again on target for Al-Ahli’s fourth goal, but there was some late drama with Caps left-back Ronald Pfumbidzai pulling one back from the penalty spot before skipper Hardlife Zvirekwi headed home a second. It, however, proved late as the Libyans held on for victory.

Chitiyo said they don’t want to be in that situation again here.

“It’s regrettable. Everything was not just right on that day. We can’t blame anyone, but we have to do the right thing. We have to be organised and do the best for ourselves. What we don’t want is to repeat those mistakes. They managed to score goals in Harare, so we can score here as well, it’s possible. Like I said, we have to believe in ourselves,” Chitiyo said.

He believes playing at a neutral venue will allow them to play without pressure.

“I thinks it’s an advantage, but the whole work has to be done in 90 minutes. We are happy that there won’t be too much intimidation from the fans, but we are still strong to face such challenges. We are not at this stage by mistake. I am not paying attention to such things as the absence of their fans, but on what we are going to deliver.”

THE fierce rivalry between Highlanders supporters and their Dynamos counterparts which has sometimes led to the premature ending of matches has spurred musician Derrick Majaivana to pen a song titled, Bhora Mutambo, to try and unite the two sets of football supporters.

The track, a collaboration between Majaivana and Harare-based artistes Bazuka and Faith Candy, is set to be released today.

Majaivana said the song was meant to promote sportsmanship in football matches.

“The song is meant to promote sportsmanship, especially during matches between Highlanders and Dynamos. We yearn for a football match where we can embrace each other as people and a nation as this is just a sport, not war,” said Majaivana.

He said he was pained by the recent fines handed down to Bosso because of violence at Barbourfields Stadium.

“The violence cost my team Bosso recently and it also affected Dynamos too. We can’t go on like this, we need to be united because this is just a football match we should enjoy.”

As soon as the song is released, Majaivana wants to record a video for the track which will feature players from both teams.

“The video is in its final stages of completion. We want to engage Bosso and Dembare players and administrators to be part of it so that we can foster unity among the teams,” said Majaivana.

“Just like the way I worked with Bazuka and Faith Candy who are an outfit from Harare to come up with something entertaining for the people, Bosso and Dembare fans can come together.”

A FIRE razed an unoccupied building and reduced five cars to shells in Bulawayo’s Central Business District (CBD) yesterday.

It is suspected the inferno was caused by homeless people who were sheltering inside the building and the situation was worsened by fuel which was kept in the building by illegal fuel dealers.

No one was injured in the fire while the value of the damaged property is yet to be ascertained.

The building which is at the corner of 11th Avenue and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street near Magnet House, was torched at about 2PM.

The raging fire attracted scores of people who watched helplessly as the flames devoured the building and reduced five vehicles that were parked near the building to shells.

A few brave onlookers however managed to save the other vehicles that were also parked near the building.

A BMW, Mercedes Benz, two Honda Fit vehicles and a Toyota Allion could not be saved from the menacing flames.

The city’s fire fighters and the few daring members of the public became the day’s heroes as they teamed up to put out the fire before it spread to the adjacent Magnet House.

Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street and 11th Avenue were partially closed to allow the fire fighters to do their work.

A drone whose operators were unidentified flew across the scene as it took aerial pictures of the inferno with some members of the public assuming it was the latest technology used in fire fighting.

By 6PM shocked members of the public were still milling around the building with others taking pictures of the shell that was left.

The city’s Chief Fire Officer Mr Richard Peterson said the situation was worsened by petrol which was stored in the building.

He said investigations proved that the building was home to street kids and was also used to store fuel by illegal fuel dealers.

“We found two pots, a number of plates, tomatoes, onions mealie meal and isitshwala/sadza. It shows they were using the fire to cook. We also suspect that there was fuel that was kept in the building by illegal fuel dealers,” he said.

He urged property owners to secure their unoccupied buildings to ensure they are not used for dubious activities.

Marvelous Nakamba being unveiled as a Club Brugge player

Marvelous Nakamba being unveiled as a Club Brugge player

Sikhumbuzo Moyo, Senior Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWEAN international midfielder Marvelous Nakamba who was signed for close to $4 million by top Belgian side Club Brugge has already been compared to the club’s legendary 40-year-old defensive midfielder, Timmy Simons.

Simons  played as a defensive midfielder and is known for his tireless work ethic and penalty-taking ability, having scored 48 competitive goals through the spot missing only five.

“New Simons comes from Zimbabwe”: screamed the headline from De Standard newspaper which also revealed that the former Bantu Rovers junior player was captured from Netherlands side Vitesse for a fee of about $4 million in a four- year deal.

“A number six, a replacement for Timmy Simons, sure to be added,”  Club Brugge chief executive officer Vincent Mannaert told De Standard newspaper.

Nakamba, the son of former Hwange goalkeeper Anthony, passed his medicals at the club on Tuesday and will now join Zimbabwe’s elite footballers to play in Europe’s club competition who include legendary goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar, Kennedy Chihuri, Norman Mapeza, Costa Nhamoinesu and Musa Mguni.

He had also been linked to English Premier League side Everton, Turkish giants Galatasaray and top German sides Hamburger SV and Wolfsburg.

Judge defers judgment on Jindu’s bail application

Rodney Tongai Jindu

Rodney Tongai Jindu

Auxilia Katongomara, Chronicle Reporter
SUSPECTED serial killer, Rodney Tongai Jindu, who is seeking bail at the High Court will know the outcome of his application tomorrow after a High Court Judge yesterday deferred judgement.

Jindu (26) from Bulawayo’s Glengarry suburb who allegedly shot dead his friend and a neighbour before burying their bodies in shallow graves in Burnside suburb, told the court that he would abide by any demands the court puts to him as long as he gets bail.

The incarcerated murder suspect who was ditched by his lawyer, Byron Sengweni some months ago, yesterday appeared before High Court, Justice Nicholas Mathonsi, as a self-actor in his bail application.

“My intention for the application is that I’m facing serious charges and I therefore need a strong defence counsel of my choice. At the moment, I’m broke, I have no money or assets which is why I’m a self actor. If I’m granted bail, I will be able to source funds to pay my legal costs.

“I am innocent until proven guilty and it is my constitutional right to have a legal counsel that is at my discretion,” said Jindu.

He told the court that he would abide by any conditions set by the court in granting him bail.

“Your worship, I am willing to reside at my given address, surrender my travel documents or even report daily to the police and stick to the radius given to me.

“I have seen that in South Africa they have ankle braces that they put on prisoners, I am willing to have a device fitted on my ankle to show that it’s known that I am awaiting trial,” said Jindu.

For the state, Mr Khumbulani Ndlovu opposed the bail application saying Jindu was a flight risk due to the seriousness of the charges he is facing.

“My Lord, the opposition to bail being granted to the applicant is largely premised on the applicant’s likelihood to abscond. He cannot be trusted to wait to stand trial because he facing serious counts of two murders, one of which is a ritual murder. There is a strong prima facie case against the applicant and the likelihood of absconding is very strong,” said Mr Ndlovu.

He told the court that Jindu had during investigations tried to bribe an investigating officer by offering him a car and money.

The State invited Detective Chief Inspector Philip Tada who told the court that after Jindu realised that he was becoming a chief suspect in the murder of his first friend, he immediately offered to bribe him by offering him a car and money.

He said later on as they awaited detectives from CID homicide to collect Jindu from Nkulumane Police Station, Jindu tried to escape and they gave chase and apprehended him.

“His attempt to bribe the investigating officer at that time shows that he was trying to run away from responsibility. We have a strong case against him and there is a danger of him absconding if released on bail,” said the prosecutor.

Jindu refuted the allegations and asked why police had not opened charges of bribery and attempting to escape from lawful custody.
Justice Mathonsi told Jindu to come back tomorrow for a ruling on his bail application.

Since his arrest he has made several demands from prison.

Two weeks ago, he told magistrate Mr Tinashe Tashaya that he wants the State to release his Nissan Gloria Sedan car so that his mother, Ms Engelina Mawaro, can use it to bring him better food at Khami remand prison.

He said he cannot stand prison food and therefore required regular and better cooked meals from home.

Cde Saviour Kasukuwere

Cde Saviour Kasukuwere

Felex Share, Harare Bureau
The Zanu-PF Presidium will make a determination on the fate of national political commissar Cde Saviour Kasukuwere following yesterday’s Politburo meeting which discussed a report submitted by the ad-hoc probe committee.

Speaking after the extra ordinary meeting in Harare, Zanu-PF spokesperson, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, said Cde Kasukuwere’s matter was now in the hands of the party’s Presidium which comprises President Mugabe and his two deputies Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Mphoko.

Cde Kasukuwere is accused of setting parallel structures in a bid to topple President Mugabe, fanning factionalism, corruption and abuse of office.
Said Cde Khaya Moyo: “The report by the ad-hoc probe committee chaired by Cde Jacob Mudenda on the Mashonaland Central province petition was fully read to members of the Politburo page by page. There was extensive discussion of the report by members of the Politburo. The Presidium will digest the discussions and make the necessary pronouncement on the matter later.”

Cde Mudenda led a probe team that also had Cdes Khaya Moyo, Tsitsi Muzenda and Xavier Kazizi.
President Mugabe deployed a probe team to Mashonaland Central province after party structures submitted a petition to the party leadership seeking the ouster of Cde Kasukuwere.

Other provinces save for Bulawayo have also passed a vote of no confidence on the national commissar.

The probe team has found Cde Kasukuwere guilty of the many charges raised in a petition submitted by party cadres from his home province, Mashonaland Central.

The report noted that on factionalism Cde Kasukuwere was creating shadow Members of Parliament in some constituencies with sitting legislators.

The move is widely believed to be part of Cde Kasukuwere’s larger plot to topple President Mugabe by planting people loyal to him in key positions.

Further, the team also concluded that the province had lost confidence in the leadership of Cdes Kasukuwere, Dickson Mafios (acting provincial chairman) and Wonder Mashange (provincial secretary for administration).

It also emerged that Cde Kasukuwere was excessively interfering with operations of the province as he was a signatory to the party’s provincial account.

This is despite the fact that he is not provincial member.

“It is the finding of the committee that there are two contending groups as bolstered by the creation of shadow members of Parliament against some sitting MPs and a sitting Senator may of necessity create divisions and factions in the province,” reads the report.

“It is the finding of the committee that the petition expressed loss of confidence in the leadership of the three accused persons by bringing the name of the party into disrepute, but more importantly, that the underlying reference to the parallel structures and fanning of factionalism were intended to topple the elected President and the First Secretary of Zanu-PF Cde RG Mugabe.”

On corruption, the report said: “The committee noted that the national political commissar Cde S Kasukuwere, was ostensibly the principal signatory to the provincial party account at the exclusion of the provincial secretary for finance, which is a gross abuse of authority by a national political leader.

“It is the finding of the committee that there are serious competing mining interests as exemplified in Mukaradzi and Kitsiyatota mining claims, which led to the victimisation of the Women’s League members and more pronounced against Cde (Remegio) Matangira, whose case was referred to His Excellency, the President for intervention. The competing mining interests have spilled into the courts whereby the Women’s League formed a Women’s Mining Trust, which has approached the High Court under case number HC/1673/17 reference 12100/2016.

Cde Matangira whose mining property has been destroyed to the tune of $600 000, has approached the Constitutional Court to claim his mining rights under case number CCZ36/16.”

The committee noted the corrupt leadership of Cdes Mafios and Mashange at provincial level.

“The committee noted that the leadership of acting chairman DI Mafios and the provincial secretary for administration Cde W Mashange leaves a lot to be desired in the terms of the shambolic state of administrative and financial records as well as party assets,” reads the report.

“This is revealed by the unauthorised sale of a party vehicle, unaccounted funds from the sale of party cards and data forms as well as the abuse of donated funds and building materials. Arising from the lack of prudential upkeep of provincial bank account as demonstrated in the role of the national commissar Cde S Kasukuwere and the abuse of office by the acting provincial chairman Cde DI Mafios and provincial secretary for administration Cde W Mashange as stated above, is indicative of dictatorial leadership by the accused.”

The committee affirmed that 11 allegations against Cde Kasukuwere and his two accomplices were elaborated in the verbatim report as submissions by members of the Provincial Coordinating Committee during the probe in compliance with the first term of reference which states that the committee had to ensure members in attendance are legitimate members of the Mashonaland Central Provincial Coordinating Committee.

Zimbabwe is expecting to harvest four million tonnes of food crops from the 2016/17 cropping season according to the final Government sponsored crop and livestock assessment report. This means that the country will have a surplus of one million tonnes of food crops.

The food crops include maize, sorghum, millet, roundnuts, groundnuts, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, cowpeas, sugar beans and pumpkins. The increase in food production has been attributed to the Presidential Inputs Support Scheme and the Command Agriculture programme.

Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Dr Joseph Made said the country will this year realise a surplus in most crops. He said maize expected this year is about 2,1 million tonnes representing an increase of about 300 percent compared to the 800 000 tonnes harvested during the 2015/16 agricultural season.

Dr Made said total harvest of maize and small grains expected this year is more than 2,5 million tonnes against human consumption of 1,5 million tonnes per year.

What is encouraging is that communal farmers are leading in maize production thereby guaranteeing most households food security. The communal farmers’ maize output increased by a massive 364 percent. The farmers who last year produced about 166 000 tonnes of maize, are this year expected to harvest more than 770 000 tones.

The A1, A2 farmers, old resettlement sector farmers as well as small scale commercial farmers, all increased maize production this year. The expected bumper harvest has prompted Government to re-introduce marketing boards to assist farmers to market their produce.

Most provinces including those provinces which usually record low yields due to marginal rainfall such as Midlands, Matabeleland North and South as well as Masvingo are also expecting a surplus this year.

Farmers who worked very hard to increase production in the 2016/17 agricultural season might not enjoy the fruits of their sweat unless Government addresses the issue of moisture content which has seen the Grain Marketing Board rejecting maize delivered to its depots throughout the country.

Maize with moisture content in excess of 12,5 percent is being rejected forcing farmers to sell the rejected maize at a song at the black market. Farmers are supposed to take the maize back home to allow it to dry but most opt to sell it to middlemen who are paying for as little as $150 per tonne yet Government has pegged the producer price at $390 per tonne.

The farmers whose maize is rejected are supposed to pay for three trips to bring it back to the GMB hence most are selling it to middlemen to cut on transport costs. The obtaining situation is a serious threat to the Command Agriculture programme as many of the farmers that benefited from the programme might fail to pay for the inputs they received. Farmers contracted under Command Agriculture are expected to pay for the inputs from part of their produce through a stop order facility after delivering their maize to the GMB.

There is therefore an urgent need to address this moisture content challenge so that farmers sell their maize to the GMB. Farmers on their part should take samples of their harvested maize to the GMB to check on moisture content before contracting transporters to deliver the produce to depots. In the event of the farmer delivering maize with high moisture content, the GMB should use dryers to reduce the moisture content instead of rejecting the maize.

We want to once again implore Government to put in place measures to protect farmers against unscrupulous middlemen that are fleecing them by paying very little for their produce which they later sell at huge profits to the GMB.

Sikhumbuzo Moyo, Senior Sports Reporter
AMAZULU winger Ovidy Karuru and seasoned Dynamos left back Ocean Mushure have been named the co-captains for the Zimbabwe squad that will take part in the Cosafa Castle Cup in South Africa next week.

The squad will be trimmed to 20 this morning ahead of departure tomorrow by air to Johannesburg before the team connects by road to Northwest province where the tournament will be held.

“Karuru and Mushure will be our co-captains for the tournament. We looked at seniority and the ability to lead and we felt the two guys will complement each other,” said team manager Wellington Mpandare.

He said training has been going on well with all the players called up by the technical team reporting for camp.

“I must say the guys are looking forward to the tournament, they are raring to go and eager to lift the regional trophy,” said Mpandare.

Zimbabwe won the fourth and last of their Cosafa trophy eight years ago ironically under the tutelage of Sunday Chidzambwa, who leads the technical team and will be assisted by Lloyd Mutasa and Bongani Mafu.

Chidzambwa guided Zimbabwe to the title on home soil eight years ago with a 3-1 victory over Zambia in the final and they were losing finalists to the same opposition in 2013. The Warriors suffered disappointing first round exit in 2015 and 2016.

Ocean Mushure

Ocean Mushure

Five of the players in the squad ply their trade in the Absa Premiership in South Africa while the rest are in the local Castle Lager League.

Goalkeeper George Chigova (Polokwane City), defender Eric Chipeta (Ajax Cape Town), midfielders Ovidy Karuru (AmaZulu) and Michelle Katsvairo (Kaizer Chiefs), and striker Knox Mutizwa (Lamontville Golden Arrows), make up the contingent of players based outside of Zimbabwe.

The selection of Mutizwa in particular will be exciting for fans after he excelled during a loan spell at Golden Arrows from BidVest Wits. He netted five goals in the second half of the campaign, including against both Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Chidzambwa’s selection was restricted to a point by the fact that the ZPL continues through the Cosafa Castle Cup tournament, meaning some players he might have liked to take to South Africa are not available.

The coach has, however, been able to bring in-form Bantu Rovers striker Bukhosi Sibanda and Highlanders’ Prince Dube for the tournament, with the two Bulawayo lads having a combined 16 league goals this season, Sibanda netting 10 of them.

The Warriors start their campaign on Monday against Mozambique at the Moruleng Stadium, before clashes with Madagascar at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on June 28 and Seychelles at the same venue on June 30.

If Zimbabwe top their group they will face Swaziland in the quarterfinals on July 2, with the winner of that tie meeting either Namibia or Lesotho in the next round.

Warriors Cosafa Cup Squad
Goalkeepers: George Chigova (Polokwane City), Takabva Mawaya (Ngezi Platinum Stars), Talbert Mutombeni (Chapungu)

Defenders: Eric Chipeta (Ajax Cape Town, SA), Ocean Mushure (Dynamos), Honest Moyo (Highlanders) Bruce Homora (Black Rhinos), Jimmy Tigere (Harare City), Jameson Mukombwe (Black Rhinos), Nyasha Mpofu (Shabanie)

‘Economic prospects positive’: World Bank projects 2,8 GDP growth with mining sector expected to continue growing

$

news_bWorld-Bank

Auxilia Katongomara, Chronicle Reporter
ZIMBABWE’S economic growth prospects are positive, the World Bank has said in its latest economic update.

According to the bank’s Zimbabwe Economic Update (ZEU), the agricultural sector is projected to return to its long-term growth trend after 2017.

The bank said favourable rains during the 2016/17 agricultural season are expected to drive a robust recovery, and the agricultural sector is projected to make a sizeable contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth this year.

It said improving weather conditions will be complemented by the ongoing suspension of import duties on some fertiliser products through the end of this year and by the ongoing allocation of underutilised land managed by ARDA and other Government agencies to experienced farmers.

The bank also said the Government’s Command Agriculture programme is projected to boost agricultural output.

“Zimbabwe’s long-term growth prospects are strong. Zimbabwe possesses substantial human and natural resources, and it continues to spend more on education as a share of GDP than any other country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Continued growth in agriculture and mining could boost other sectors through backward and forward linkages. Moreover, investors could leverage Zimbabwe’s well-educated workforce to expand non-traditional service exports. Though Zimbabwe’s infrastructure has deteriorated in recent years, a lower risk premium on international credit could facilitate access to capital and help to revive major industries,” said the bank.

It said the mining sector is expected to continue growing, even though it will remain vulnerable to macro-economic conditions.

Chrome and diamonds, the bank said, are expected to drive growth in the mining sector following the removal of an export ban on unprocessed chrome and the anticipated resolution of lawsuits that are keeping some diamond mines closed.

“Gold production, which accounts for half of the mining sector’s foreign-exchange earnings, is expected to increase by 10 percent, and global gold prices are projected to remain broadly stable,” it said.

The bank said the manufacturing sector requires investment and access to imports.

It said the introduction of bond notes in November last year have eased liquidity challenges.

“However, further issues of bond notes will need to be carefully monitored to contain inflationary pressures,” the bank said.

It said the GDP growth rate is expected to recover to 2,8 percent in 2017, though medium-term projections remain relatively modest.

Favourable rains and a revitalised agriculture sector are expected to underpin GDP growth in 2017.

However, the incomplete implementation of fiscal-adjustment policies and structural reforms, and the possibility that a rising money supply will boost inflation, are likely to dampen Zimbabwe’s medium-term growth outlook, said the bank.

High level team to court investors. . . 300 delegates warm up for Zim-SA investment indaba

Vice President Mnangagwa

Vice President Mnangagwa

Business Editor
ABOUT 300 delegates are expected to attend the high ranking Zimbabwe/South Africa Investment Conference that begins in Sandton tomorrow.

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa would lead the Zimbabwean delegation composed of ministers; Patrick Chinamasa (Finance), Walter Chidhakwa (Mines), Dr Obert Mpofu (Macro-economic Planning), Dr Mike Bimha (Industry and Commerce), Sithembiso Nyoni (Small to Medium Enterprises) and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor, Dr John Mangudya.

The delegation would use the two-day event to showcase Zimbabwe’s investment opportunities anchored on the “ease of doing business”. VP Mnangagwa is expected to deliver the keynote address.

The team will share the stage with their South African counterparts led by Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa and ministers; Dr Rob Davies (Industry and Trade), Lindiwe Zulu (SMEs business Development) and Professor Hlengiwe Buhle Mkhize (Home Affairs).

The president of the Zimbabwe/South Africa Forum, which is organising the event, Mr Anele Ndlovu, said the Zimbabwean delegation has confirmed attendance, adding the event has already been oversubscribed.

“Preparations are now at final stages, the delegates have started arriving. We were expecting 250 but we are overbooked, we may get 350 or more,” he told Business Chronicle yesterday.

Zimbabwe and South Africa enjoy cordial relations dating back to pre-independence era. The two states have close business and trade links with South Africa being the major export destination for Zimbabwean products and source of imports while dozens of her companies have subsidiaries in the country.

Surveys have shown that a larger proportion of Zimbabweans in the Diaspora are based in South Africa whose citizens have blood ties with some Zimbabwean nationals.

Despite the challenges facing the economy in recent years the country is geared for robust gains riding on increased agriculture and mining growth and investment impetus derived from the on-going ease of doing business reforms. International organisations such as the World Bank and IMF have also predicted positive growth for Zimbabwe and commended the policy reviews including re-engagement with the international community after years of illegal sanctions by the West.

It is against this background that the Zim-SA investment conference seeks to amplify the fact that Zimbabwe is now open for business and also provide information on the ease of doing business in Zimbabwe.

“Zimbabwe is generally a victim of misperceptions out there. The conference will provide a platform where potential investors can hear directly from the proverbial horse’s mouth about what it means to invest in Zimbabwe,” said Mr Ndlovu.

“Key stakeholders have been invited to come and directly address the concerns of potential investors.”

He said the Zimbabwean delegation, lead by VP Mnangagwa, who is the head of the economic cluster in Cabinet, comprising key ministries and the country’s central bank, will make presentations on issues concerning investing in Zimbabwe.

“This is an opportunity, therefore, for the investment community, diaspora community, and those whose companies wishing to expand into Zimbabwe to come and ask questions related to their concerns and areas where they do not have clarity,” said Mr Ndlovu.
